When it comes to my 8th grade unit on Value, we are focused on the process. Students start with shading with color pencils and then drawing pencils with creating value scales. I emphasize "NO smearing" and encourage the method of layering. Students then do the assignment featured below called "Expressive Shoe Shading." Assignment: Create a composition that features a shoe of your choice with both it and the background broken into sections that are then shaded by all the drawing pencils to create mini values scales.
