The Elements of Design: What all art is made up of. They are: Line, Shape, Color, Space, Form, Texture, and Value. When students know the core vocabulary of the Visual Art class, they evidently create stronger and more thoughtful compositions. They also are able to better discuss and write about the art of others and themselves. I have found that by starting the semester off with a major assignment that focuses on The Elements of Design, I have a semester filled with overall "art smart" students. After taking a bookmaking class for my Master's program, I decided to combine the needed vocabulary with simple bookmaking to create an assignment that was strong in basic skills and proactive in teaching my students the Elements of Design. By spending a day on each page/element, students are able to focus and truly learn the necessary vocabulary.
