As a teacher, I have found that the concept of "Free Art Time" is either welcomed with wide-eyed imagination or fear of the freedom disguised as the phrase "I am so bored." I have just this year created what is called the "Early Finisher Table." This is a place for fast workers to go if they need a little guidance with some extra time before the end of class. The table consists of: adult coloring pages (free from the internet), art contest forms from the community, plain white paper, a basket of print outs and "how to draw" images, and the "Scrap Bucket" of pieces of paper or former project materials that can be reused. I also have a mini art library. These books or magazines are random but delightful in information. I found a used copy from Amazon for around $3 and have no regrets buying it for the Early Finishers Table! It is perfect for students who like little (both in time commitment and in size) activities and who need a little boost in getting ideas on what exactly to draw. I had a student enjoy this book so much that she has worked to fill an entire sketchbook page with tiny little drawings:
